Here, in between the two parts, Mays does a 7 minute piano solo that captures a style pretty unique to him: its jazz piano meets floating Claude Debussy type melodies and Sergei Rachmaninov type pyrotechnics and, all in all, very much individually Lyle Mays, if you known what I mean. A real highlight. Mays originally recorded this as a jolly little 3 minute solo piece, but it is here given a 13 minute upbeat band performance and that's its merit.
This is a nice if not outstanding rendition. To me, those 4 tracks make an album. Regarding the remainder: they don't necessarily highlight Mays himself. The track titled "disbelief" is really just an introduction to "Are we there yet? The opener "Fictionary" also the title of his album is effectively a virtuoso improvisation on the refrain theme of "La Fiesta" by Chick Corea to whom the tune is dedicated but done in a jazz-band format here that is a bit tiresome.
It opens with a Mays piano solo for six minutes yes, it does sound good but you know what that means? It must be followed by a six minute sax solo, a six minute bass solo, a six minute drum solo, so you have a 24 minute track that you might have preferred to have been just a five minute piano solo: such is jazz.
This may not be an "essential album" to hear, although being a German release for an artist who has now passed it may not be available for too long. As an admirer of Mays, I'm glad to have it before it "disappears". But I think the four-track-blue-note-LP playlist for the album is the one that will work for me, any time I choose to listen again. The highlights make for a more enjoyable listen than the full concert.
Wow, at last!! Like the last reviewer, I have been waiting and searching for information and material by Lyle Mays. Apart from a few snippets of film on YouTube, there has been nothing. Now at last we have not one, but two CD's of great live Jazz from the master piano player.

A founding father of soul, whose career spanned half a century, Ray Charles cannot be reduced to a handful of famous hits. He is above all the master of the high-end musical crossover that makes an art of mixing genres, approaching one to better embrace the other.
Ray Charles secularised gospel, enriched the blues, played jazz, sang country and approached rock'n'roll. Let's take a look back at his unique style based on the five listed here. Thirty years after his death, Miles Davis is still one of the most important musicians of his time.
The trumpeter's impressive discography perfectly sums up his perpetually questioning, probing attitude; and also shows how his influence reaches out beyond the world of jazz.
These ten albums, selected subjectively from among a sea of revolutionary works, prove it. Since its creation in the late s, Bossa-nova has become an indispensable part of Brazilian music.
