Morgan was also a family man, dad to a son, Jerry Greer, whom he described to People as a "funny," "stud athlete," "dang rockstar," and "beautiful soul. At one point, Greer left the tube and headed into the water It puzzled authorities, as the young man had been wearing a life jacket.

Greer still had the life jacket on when his body was recovered from the lake more than a day later. The young man was just 19 years old and had been slated to play football at Marshall University that fall. George Strait is nicknamed the "King of Country" for good reason. The cowboy hat-wearing megastar is a little bit of a country traditionalist, but his songs are slick enough to have helped bridge the gap between pop and country.

The result: Strait has scored a whopping 60 No. And that's not even counting "Amarillo by Morning," which didn't hit number one, even though it is objectively fantastic. All that good fortune does not, of course, make a person's life invincible and untouchable. The driver, year-old Gregory Wilson Allen, reportedly made a snap turn to a side road but missed. The car skidded and completely flipped over, landing upside-down in a ditch.

No one in the car had buckled their seatbelt, and, while Robbins and McDonald sustained minor injuries and Allen was unhurt, Strait Album) partially ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. In the aftermath, Allen was charged with misdemeanor criminally negligent homicide, while George Strait helped set up the Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation.

Ever since, the charity has supported various organizations in the San Antonio area, where the Straits live. Margo Price became a huge presence in country music in just a short time, releasing two critically acclaimed albums Midwest Farmer's Daughter and All American Made of stark, deeply personal, haunting songs since While it seems like she's an overnight sensation, she's been toiling and struggling for years to make a name for herself.

She moved to Nashville in and was rejected by as many as 30 record labels. At one point, she sold her car and pawned her engagement ring to pay for studio time to record her own stuff.

That all pales to the agony Price suffered in her off-stage life. The line in her song "Hands of Time," in which Price says, "My firstborn died and I cried out to God," is all too true. Doctors made Price aware of the condition about halfway through her pregnancy and that the baby would need to have heart surgery almost immediately after birth. Sadly, the corrective surgery "just did not work," Price said, and the child died after just a couple of weeks of life.

Price admitted that it "was dark days for a while," and, afterwards, she self-medicated with alcohol. But she pulled through thanks to a "very supportive" husband, Jeremy Iveywho is also the guitarist in her band. Gary Allan has been a reliable presence in the world of country music for more than 20 years, but he's best known for sentimental and Your Old Love Letters - Ricky Skaggs - Waitin For The Sun To Shine (8-Track Cartridge tracks like "Tough Little Boys" and "Nothing On but the Radio.

InAllan experienced a family-shattering moment that seemed to come completely out of nowhere via People. After proposing to flight attendant Angela Herzberg in and marrying, he blended his family with his wife's — they each had three kids — and settled into a house in Tennessee. Herzberg began to suffer from severe allergies, which led to migraines. On the night of Oct.

He did, returned, tucked the kids in, and turned on the TV. Allan then checked on his wife, who asked him to get her a Coke to help with the nausea. Allan went to the kitchen and then "heard a loud pop.

Herzberg, who had suffered from untreated depression, had taken her own life. Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush perform as a duo under the name Sugarland. The band hadn't even started playing yet when disaster struck. A storm came through, and, with it, a freakishly large gust of wind. It blew through the outdoor performance space and tore Your Old Love Letters - Ricky Skaggs - Waitin For The Sun To Shine (8-Track Cartridge roof offknocking down a canopy, some scaffolding, and various other equipment.

It all fell into the crowd, where Your Old Love Letters - Ricky Skaggs - Waitin For The Sun To Shine (8-Track Cartridge crushed — and killed — four fans. Myth Science InDusty Springfield was already an international superstar with fifteen hits under her belt for the Philips label when she decided it was time for a change. What followed was one of the most legendary and momentous label moves in pop music history: Dusty decamped to Atlantic Records, where, under the tutelage of Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin, she recorded one of the greatest albums of all time, Dusty in Memphis, and scored such indelible hits as 'Son-of-a Preacher Man' and 'The Windmills of Your Mind' before moving on to Philly soul 'A Brand New Me.

We at Real Gone Music have closely examined this crucial period in Dusty's career over the years, with three previous releases. But there remains one facet of her Atlantic period which has remained largely untouched: her singles. The Complete Atlantic Singles presents the A and B-sides of all dozen singles she recorded for the label in their original mono single mixes, on vinyl for the first time in over 50 years most of these single mixes weren't even available on compact disc until our recent CD release.

Poetic - Various - Absolute Music 79 (CD)

Analyzing the symphonies of the Viennese masters was likely a given part of Tchaikovsky's curriculum at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory.

Through it he apparently realized, as musicologist Ralph W. Wood points out, "that design is a crucial factor in music. He idolized Mozart as a master of form, was aware of how his idol's symphonies functioned compared to his own and found his own lacking.

Tchaikovsky confessed to his patroness, Nadezhda von Meckthat while his First Symphony "is in many ways very immature, yet fundamentally it has more substance and is better than many of my other more mature works. Here Tchaikovsky harnessed the harmonic, melodic and rhythmic quirks of Ukrainian folk music to produce an opening movement massive in scale, intricate in structure and complex in texture—what Brown calls "one of the most solid structures Tchaikovsky ever fashioned" [47] —and a finale that, with the folk song "The Crane" offered in an ever-dizzying series of backdrops, showcased how well he could mine the same vein as Glinka and the nationalist set Poetic - Various - Absolute Music 79 (CD) composers known collectively as The Five.

When he revised the work eight years after its premiere, he made a large cut in the finale and wrote a clearer, simpler first movement along Western lines. However, Tchaikovsky's friend and former student Sergei Taneyev considered the earlier one superior. His reputation as one of the finest craftsmen among Russian composers lends his opinion considerable weight. The Third Symphony is unique among Tchaikovsky's symphonies in musical key the only one written in the major and number of movements five.

While Tchaikovsky struggled with his first three symphonies, developments in Europe led to an alternative to this genre that, in a reverse twist, offered to change the scope of the symphony. Hungarian composer Franz Liszt desired a form of orchestral music that would offer greater flexibility in developing musical themes than the symphony then allowed but also preserve the overall unity of a musical composition.

By doing so, he hoped to combine the dramatic, emotive and evocative qualities of concert overtures with the scale and musical complexity normally reserved for the opening movements of symphonies. The fruit of Liszt's labors was what he eventually termed symphonic poems. In them, he used two alternatives to sonata form. Beethoven had used the first of these, cyclic formto link separate movements thematically with one another. Liszt took this process one step further by combining themes into a single-movement cyclic structure.

Schubert used thematic transformation to bind together the movements of his Wanderer Fantasya work that had a tremendous influence on Liszt. Liszt's approach to musical form in his symphonic poems was also unorthodox. Instead of following a strict presentation and development of musical themes as in sonata form, he placed his themes into a loose, episodic pattern. There, recurring melodies called motifs were thematically transformed as musical and programmatic needs dictated.

A number of composers, especially Bohemian and Russian, followed in Liszt's footsteps to develop the symphonic poem further. There, he dabbled with the free form the new genre offered. However, the work did not come out well and he destroyed it after two performances. Tchaikovsky's view of program music was ambivalent. He disliked the genre personally but generally needed some sort of subject upon which to write.

Whether that catalyst was a literary source, an overt program or a more subjective one based on an abstract theme such as love or fate did not necessarily matter. He needed something to fire his imagination and get his creative juices flowing. When he was caught up in the drama or the emotional states of the characters, as in Romeo and Julietthe results could be spectacular.

When the work became difficult, as it would when he worked on the Manfred symphony, he became discouraged and complained that writing to a program was unpleasant and it was easier to do so without one. In a letter to von Meck dated December 5,Tchaikovsky outlined two kinds of inspiration for a symphonic composer, a subjective and an objective one:. In the first instance, [the composer] uses his music to express his own feelings, joys, sufferings; in short, like a lyric poet he pours out, so to speak, his own soul.

In this instance, a program is not only not necessary but even impossible. But it is another matter when a musician, reading a poetic work or struck by a scene in nature, wishes to express in musical form that subject that has kindled his inspiration. Here a program is essential Program music can and must exist, just as it is impossible to demand that literature make do without the epic element and limit itself to lyricism alone.

Writing to a program, then, was apparently a matter of course for Tchaikovsky. Technically, for him, every piece of music could contain a program. The difference for him lay in the explicitness or implicitness of the program itself. A symphony generally followed the lines of an implicit program, while a symphonic poem followed an explicit one.

In fact, Brown claims, there is a considerable amount of Tchaikovsky's symphonic manner contained in the symphonic poem Francesca da Riminiwhich the composer wrote not long before the Fourth Symphony. Also, Tchaikovsky was apparently expanding his conception of the symphony from one where Germanic models were to be followed slavishly to a looser, more flexible alternative more in keeping with the symphonic poem.

Sonata form, according to Wood, was never intended to be a musical straitjacket but, rather, to leave the composer "innumerable choices for building up a coherent movement" that would offer variety and, "by the relationships of its successive thematic elements and the management of its transitions He wrote to von Meck, after he had written the Fourth Symphony.

You ask if I keep to established forms. Yes and no. There are certain kinds of compositions which imply the use of familiar forms, for example symphony. Because of the simplicity of the melody. It's one of the hardest things to do, to write a melody that people don't forget. At that point Al Jackson Jr. After a couple of uptempo Verses, the song modulates a 5th higher for the Chorus. After two Choruses in G and four Verses in C, it goes into a long bar Bridge with several additional modulations and lots of new chords never heard before in the song.

Finally that extended 4-part Bridge breaks down into a bluesy solo organ for about 12 bars, appropriately ending the piece just as it had begun, with only Booker T. Although a shorter single version was released, this is a note-for-note transcription of the longer versionreleased on the UpTight album. Released in in Boston's very first album, "Smokin'" is one of rock's most important B-3 organ songs.

From its first entrance at until when it lays out near the end, Tom Scholz' B-3 is the main underpinning, ranging from Jimmy-Smith-goes-rock lightning-fast runs and "Phantom of the Opera"-type pipe organ chords to some of the most exuberant palm glissandi on record.

This is a note-for-note transcription of the entire organ part in "Smokin'" - measures - including the complete clavinet part plus much of the bass guitar part. If you'd like to play "Smokin'" exactly as it was recorded, this is just what you're looking for. This score is a very clear way to study a great rock B-3 organ classic. Here is Boston's "Smokin'" on YouTube. At the age of five Brent Mason taught himself to play guitar by ear, and went on to become one of Nashville's leading session guitarists.

In he released his first album, "Hot Wired", an album of instrumentals. The title song is an uptempo track BPM with virtuoso guitar licks, and an equally impressive piano solo by Matt Rollingshimself one of Nashville's A-list session players. It also contains the brief piano riff that Rollings throws in later in the song. If you'd like to play the "Hot Wired" piano solo exactly as Matt Rollings and Wil Houchens play it - and it's an excellent study in how to expand out from pentatonic scales and embrace more sophisticated chromaticism - this is just what you need.

Telling the story about the three stages in Jimmy Brown's life, it is a warmly sung recording with an excellent 'feel' to the Choruses, due in large part to the piano, which was played by Floyd Cramer, as told to me by Jim Ed Brown himself. However, the piano part is hard to hear because of the accompanying instruments and vocals.

This is a note-for-note transcription of Floyd Cramer's entire piano part on The Browns' now-classic recording, which reached No. Springsteen was in the studio recording his "Darkness on the Edge of Town" album with producer Jimmy Iovine, and recorded a version of it. He wasn't happy with it, and Iovine, who was producing Smith's "Easter" album at the same time, gave a recording of it to Smith.

She added some lyrics to it, and released it on "Easter", becoming the first single release from that album and rising to 13 on the Billboard Hot chart. Although Springsteen would perform the song live, and released it on his "Live " album, his studio version was never released until "The Promise" box set in November Classic Springsteen in his prime, "Because the Night" features Roy Bittan playing his classic rock piano style on the track. Starting the song with a two-bar running 8th-note figure, almost classical in nature, the piano track contains Bittan's wonderful, powerful 4-note Right Hand chords, glissandi, a different two-bar classical-like running 8th-note figure in Verse 2, octave runs, a whole-step-up modulation three-quarters of the way through, and a strong Left Hand partclosely following Garry Tallent's bass guitar line.

If you want to study Bittan's style, and play his exact notes, you'll love this complete note-for-note transcription, which contains all 96 measures - the entire song. If you'd like to also have the bass guitar part, here is the piano score, just as described above, with the addition of Garry Tallent's bass guitar part:.

It became a classic rock anthem, launching his legendary career. Springsteen has said that although the beginning of the song was written on guitar around the opening riff, the song's writing was finished on piano. The track was recorded during a touring break in August and featured session pianist David Sancious on piano.

This is the version that was the power-house radio hit for Springsteen. Beginning in June Sancious began to tour regularly with the E Street Band; and legend has it that the band took its name from the street in Belmar, New Jersey, where Sancious' mother lived, as she had allowed the band to rehearse in her home.

This piano part has never been transcribed before, but here it is now, complete - all measures of David Sancious' piano part, note-for-note. If you want to play Springsteen's radio smash hit with complete accuracy, here is your chance.

If you've ever been to a Springsteen concert sinceyou've seen and heard Roy Bittan performing "Born To Run", and Bittan's piano part is quite different from Sancious' radio-hit versionright from the beginning. Bittan replaced Sancious' intro with his own part, which follows the famous electric guitar riff, and recurs every Chorus. For other parts of the song, Bittan sometimes references a Sancious part here and there, but always with his own spin on it, and often with his hands two octaves apart, which cut through better for live shows.

When Clarence Clemons' sax solo begins, Bittan's part is quite different and during the Bridge is completely different from any of Sancious' parts - often using big fat classical-concerto chord voicings in both hands for a very dramatic effect.

At the end of the Bridge where the off-beat descending chromatic line occurs, an entire section is inserted that is not on the album version at all - a slow, out-of-time, ascending chromatic line, building the tension until the final Verse kicks in, leading to the strongly rocking Out Section.

Bittan's wonderful, dramatic performance on it has been transcribed note-for-note - all measures. If you've ever wanted to study Roy Bittan's wonderful, rocking style, here it is, complete with his octave runs, punchy right-hand chords, and high tinkly voicings - everything precisely notated. Originally written by Springsteen for The Ramones, he decided to keep it for himself. The title is drawn from a line in Alfred, Lord Tennyson's famous poem "Ulysses": "For always roaming with a hungry heart".

The Turtles, later known as Flo and Eddie, sang back-up on the recording. The keyboards on the song are outstanding, both Roy Bitten's piano and Danny Federici's organ part.

Although in the key of C, the song modulates up to E-flat for the organ solo, providing a tonal 'lift' that Federici takes wonderful advantage of in his solo - one of the catchiest, and most uplifting organ solos ever recorded - a Hammond B-3 classic. This is a note-for-note transcription of Danny Federici's B-3 organ solo on "Hungry Heart", and also includes a transcription of the bass guitar part during the 8-bar solo.

If you'd like to play Federici's exact notes and really nail one of rock's greatest B-3 solos, this is just what you need. Here is "Hungry Heart" on YouTube. The organ solo begins at On "Jungleland" Clarence Clemons takes a great sax solo. After it's over but before Bruce Springsteen resumes singing, pianist Roy Bittan plays a solo piano Interlude.

In live performances this piano Interlude varies from the album version, and one of the better performances was "Live at the Nassau Coliseum" on December 29, This is a note-for-note transcription of Roy Bittan's second, bar solo piano Interlude as played Live on If you'd like to play this brief but important part of "Jungleland" Poetic - Various - Absolute Music 79 (CD) as Roy Bittan has performed it, this is just what you need.

Earl Van Dykethe leader of the Funk Brothers, was probably the pianist. It is simply one of the most dance-able records ever, propelled by the amazing piano part.

Even before the drums come in, the bass guitar and piano kick off the song, setting forth the syncopated, foot-tapping 'groove'. And even though the piano has already been a prominent part of the recording since the beginning, halfway through the song the piano is given a solo when the singer says, "Now give me a little bit of bass with those 88's". And those ivories just continue to play a very important role in this classic recording. This is a note-for-note transcription of the complete piano part in "Cool Jerk"complete with all the very cool riffs, tremolos, chord voicings that the Funk Brothers' pianist laid down.

And the riffs are not limited to just blues-scale notes. Carrie Underwood - Undo It - Elec. Released in"Undo It" became Carrie Underwood's 7th biggest hit, selling 1. The riff is used not only during the Intro but also during the Verses.

This is a transcription of that 2-bar, 4-chord pattern. It can be tricky to pick out, so this should prove very helpful if you'd like to play it just like the original record. Although the song was not released as a single, it has received regular airplay ever since.

Perhaps one reason is the very cool synthesizer solo played by Greg Hawkes. This is a note-for-note transcription of Hawkes' 8-bar synth solowhich can be tricky to pick out because of the digital delay FX applied to it.

This score will demystify the solo and let you play it exactly as it was recorded. Prior to the actual recording, Stevens heard Wakeman play something in the recording booth, a rough sketch of what would later become "Catherine Howard". Stevens told Wakeman that he liked it and wanted something similar. Wakeman told Stevens he could not as it was his piece destined for a solo album, but Stevens persuaded him to adapt his composition.

This is a note-for-note transcription of the piano part. Play it exactly as Rick Wakeman recorded it. Taz DiGregorio played and recorded with Charlie for 47 years, until his passing in ironically, driving on his way to join the tour bus. Taz was born in in Massachusetts, where he taught himself to play by ear after being inspired by a Ray Charles concert. The Chorus contains the main piano part for the song, so this section is the key to being able to perform it accurately.

Of special interest are the booming low Left Hand octaves DiGregorio uses he uses the very lowest note on the pianowhile his Right Hand is playing a fast banjo-like, 16th-note figure. Many of Chuck Berry's recordings are known for their terrific piano parts, often played by Johnnie Johnson.

At first listen it sounds like Johnnie Johnson's high-register tinkling, but research indicates that it was Sonny Thompson, a very strong Chicago-based session player. The entire recording is underpinned by a terrific boogie-woogie piano part that happens to be almost completely in thirds in the right hand, spanning the registers from below middle C to the highest octave. Occasionally the thirds are flipped and sixths are used, but it could well be titled "boogie-woogie in thirds".

One of this track's defining characteristics is the detached, bouncy touch. Although never a sharp staccato, the right hand part is always detached, never legato, and very 'bouncy'.

Its feel is one of the best of Chuck Berry's recordings, and that's saying something. This note-for-note transcription contains the entire recording - all 98 measures - not just the 30 seconds used in the Amazon commercial. If you'd like to study how one of Chuck Berry's best piano tracks is constructed, and perhaps incorporate some of the licks into your own playing, this transcription is an excellent tutorial.

The day that Chuck Berry meet Johnnie Johnson was a good day for rock-and-roll Poetic - Various - Absolute Music 79 (CD) that was December 31, to be precise. And between Berry's lyrics and Johnnie's fabulous piano-playing, some of rock's seminal songs were written and recordings were made. They began recording for Chess Records in Chicago in and continued a string of amazing records for ten years. In their recording of "You Never Can Tell" had as much rock-and-roll energy and pure joie de vivre as any piano-based rock recording, before or since - a study in bouncy, uplifting, foot-tapping piano boogie-meets-rock.

Full of tremolos, thirds, hammered 4ths, octaves, 3-against-2 tripletsand other pianistic goodies, the entire track is underpinned by Johnson's wonderful boogie-woogie Left Hand part. And every note is precisely written out, even the tremolos - no detail is left out. Released in"Clocks" is one of Coldplay's biggest hits. The entire song is piano-driven, and starts off with Chris Martin's famous piano riff that recurs throughout the song.

Later in the song a different arpeggiated piano riff is introduced that leads into the Bridge. Immediately after the Bridge, the first piano riff is heard again, followed by the second piano riff, which begins the Out Section, eventually fading out. This is a transcription of the entire song - all measures. If you'd like to play "Clocks" from beginning to end, this is exactly what you need.

Here is "Clocks" on YouTube. Recorded in and released in on their "A Rush of Blood to the Head" album, "The Scientist" is perhaps Coldplay's most hauntingly-beautiful ballad. Piano-based, it begins with eight bars of only Chris Martin's piano, playing its signature 4-bar phrase twice.

The Left Hand in "The Scientist" does not play octaves but usually full chords and two-note intervals in voicings that can be a little tricky to pick out. They have never been accurately transcribed before.

The Right Hand part also uses some chord voicings that are not commonly found, including some Brian Wilson-influenced inner voicings using Major 9th chords and Major 6th chords. This is a note-for-note transcription of the entire album-length version - all 91 measures. If you'd like to play the haunting piano part on "The Scientist" just as Chris Martin recorded it, here is your chance to do so.

Here is a video of "The Scientist" on YouTube. Nelson's favorite recorded version was that of Patsy Cline, who, ironically, absolutely hated the song upon first hearing it. It became her biggest hit.

A pianist named zzipizape has recorded and posted onto YouTube his own solo piano arrangement of 'Crazy'. Here is a video of zzipizape performing his arrangement of 'Crazy' on YouTube.

After graduating in he and his high school sweetheart had gone to different colleges, and then moved to different states, losing touch with each other. By pure coincidence seven years later they ran into each other at a convenience store in their home town, which they were both visiting for the Christmas holidays. They bought a six-pack of beer and talked in her car for two hours, and although the spark was still there, she had married. Five years later, inshe heard the song on the radio that he'd written about their encounter, and although she had since divorced, kept quiet about it until after his death, concerned that it would disrupt Fogelberg's marriage.

Fogelberg himself refused to reveal her identity. On the recording Fogelberg played all the instruments except drums Russ Kunkel and soprano sax Michael Brecker. His piano part is a true classic.

The piano intro starts out almost like a music box, then drops down to the mid-register for the first verse, where it stays for most of the remainder.

It is a long song, almost 5 and a half minutes, comprising measures: an Introduction, ten Verses, three Choruses, and an Out section. The piano part sounds simpler than it is, ingeniously divided between two handsalthough much of it sounds like one hand - reflecting his wonderful talent as a multi-instrumentalist. This note-for-note transcription contains the first minute plus the piano Solo and the Piano breakdown, played by Michael McDonald. Recorded during late-night jams while touring, the band was comprised of rock's finest musicians: Leon Russell on pianoJim Keltner on drums, and bassist Carl Radle. After kicking the song off with an atmospheric piano Intro, Leon conjures up a smokey, swampy accompaniment straight out of Southern churchesbuilding from soft passages to aggressive gospel.

This is a note-for-note transcription of the piano part for the entire recording - almost 4 minutes long. Later Patsy Cline had a hit with it in But somewhere along the line Leon Russell envisioned it in a 'white gospel' style, very different from either Wills or Clines' versions. During the piece Leon uses lots more octaves, plus a few two-handed runs, very sweet 6ths, and some lovely chord changes. Recorded in when he was in his prime, this is full of Leon's slow-gospel stylistic licks.

This is a note-for-note transcription of Leon Russell's entire piano part - all of it. If you want to learn how Leon played, this is a good piece to play and to study. Delbert McClinton plays and writes roadhouse-style rock. He's been nominated for eight and won four Grammy Awards. One of his best performances was on opening night of the Sandy Beaches Cruise. If you'd like to include this excellent piano solo into your own performances of "Going Back to Louisiana", or would just like to study how a well-done blues solo is constructedthis is what you need.

One of rock's greatest tragedies is Dennis Wilson, one of the founding members of The Beach Boys - a tragedy not only because of a man's life cut short in his prime, but also because of a talent not fully appreciated during his lifetime. Although rich and famous as The Beach Boys' drummer, Dennis never felt that his real musical 'voice' had been realized.

He heard music in his head that did not sound like that of his brothers, Brian and Carl. Similar to Brian, he had musical visions larger and more epic than just short pop ditties. An introspective three-minute piano solo loosely referencing another of his songs, "Piano Variations" starts with gentle arpeggios, evolves through a classically-influenced Bridge, and ends ethereally with an ever-softening decrescendo to quadruple-piano pppp in the piano's higher registers.

This is a note-for-note transcription of the entire song - all 54 measures - to the very last note which is almost impossible to hear on the recording. To see a customer's comment, click here. One of rock piano's most classic recordings. An amazing piece of music, and an amazing behind-the-scenes tale. Apparently written by Rita Coolidge when she was dating drummer Jim Gordon, it was overheard by Eric Clapton when he came upon Gordon playing it in the studio during the Derek and the Dominos sessions.

This is a note-for-note transcription of the entire last half of "Layla" - the piano half - all of it, measures in all. Starting with the forceful, attention-getting opening statement by the solo piano, continuing through the many sections with their wonderful octaves and that special 'Layla' chord, all the way to the very end when the last thing you hear is Duane Allman's high-pitched 'bird call'. If you've ever wanted to play one of rock's most amazing piano instrumentals just as it was recorded, this is your chance.

Here is "Layla" on YouTube. The score includes soloists and a choir of nine mixed voices, accompanied by an instrumental group and an electro-acoustic quadraphonic system. Louis Franz Aguirre is currently one of the most prolific and renowned Cuban composers at an international level.

Throughout the years, the Cuban nation has developed a wealth of musicological material created by numerous investigators and experts on this subject. The work of some authors who provided information about the music in Cuba during the 19th century was usually included in chronicles covering a more general subject.

The first investigations and studies specifically dedicated to the musical art and practice did not appear in Cuba until the beginning of the 20th century. Most recently, a group of young Cuban musicologists have earned a well deserved reputation within the international academic field, due to their solid investigative work. It is obvious that the first popular music played in Cuba after the Spanish conquest was brought by the Spanish conquerors themselves, and was most likely borrowed from the Spanish popular music in vogue during the 16th century.

From the 16th to the 18th century some danceable songs that emerged in Spain were associated with Hispanic America, or considered to have originated in America. It seems that Punto and Zapateo Cubano were the first autochthonous musical genres of the Cuban nation. Punto guajiro or Punto Cubanoor simply Punto is a sung genre of Cuban music, an improvised poetic-music art that emerged in the western and central regions of Cuba during the 19th century.

The word punto refers to the use of a plucked technique punteadorather than strumming rasgueado. Singers gather themselves in contending teams, and improvise their lines.

Beginning aroundPunto reached a peak of popularity on Cuban radio. Punto was one of the first Cuban genres recorded by American companies at the beginning of the 20th century, but at a later time the interest decayed and little effort was made to continue recording the live radio performances. A fan of this genre, stenographer Aida Bode, wrote down many verses as they were broadcast and finally, inher transcriptions were published in book form.

Celina had one of the greatest voices in popular music, and her supporting group Campo Alegre was outstanding. He is Poetic - Various - Absolute Music 79 (CD) a published author with several collections of his poetry, much of which has a political nueva trova edge.

Zapateo is a typical dance of the Cuban "campesino" or "guajiro," of Poetic - Various - Absolute Music 79 (CD) origin. It is a dance of pairs, involving tapping of the feet, mostly performed by the male partner. Illustrations exist from previous centuries and today it survives cultivated by Folk Music Groups as a fossil genre. A genre of Cuban song similar to the Punto cubano and the Criolla. Singer and guitarist Guillermo Portabales was the most outstanding representative of this genre. Criolla is a genre of Cuban music which is closely related to the music of the Cuban Coros de Clave and a genre of Cuban popular music called Clave.

The Clave became a very popular genre in the Cuban vernacular theater and was created by composer Jorge Anckermann based on the style of the Coros de Clave. Clearly, the origin of African groups in Cuba is due to the island's long history of slavery.

Compared to the US, slavery started in Cuba much earlier and continued for decades afterwards. Cuba was the last country in the Americas to abolish the importation of slaves, and the second last to free the slaves. In the British Parliament outlawed slavery, and from then on the British Navy acted to intercept Portuguese and Spanish slave ships. By the trade with Cuba was almost extinguished; the last slave ship to Cuba was in The abolition of slavery was announced by the Spanish Crown inand put into effect in Two years later, Brazil abolished slavery.

The roots of most Afro-Cuban musical forms lie in the cabildosself-organized social clubs for the African slaves, separate cabildos for separate cultures. Other cultures were undoubtedly present, more even than listed above, but in smaller numbers, and they did not leave such a distinctive presence.

Cabildos preserved African cultural traditions, even after the abolition of slavery in At the same time, African religions were transmitted from generation to generation throughout Cuba, Haiti, other islands and Brazil. Outsiders picked up the word and have tended to use it somewhat indiscriminately.

It has become a kind of catch-all word, rather like salsa in music. All these African cultures had musical traditions, which survive erratically to the present day, not always in detail, but in general style. The best preserved are the African polytheistic religions, where, in Cuba at least, the instruments, the language, the chants, the dances and their interpretations are quite well preserved.

In what other American countries are the religious ceremonies conducted in the old language s of Africa? What unifies all genuine forms of African music is the unity of polyrhythmic percussion, voice call-and-response and dance in well-defined social settings, and the absence of melodic instruments of an Arabic or European kind. Religious traditions of African origin have survived in Cuba, and are the basis of ritual music, song and dance quite distinct from the secular music and dance.

The clave rhythmic pattern is used as a tool for temporal organization in Afro-Cuban music, such as rumbaconga de comparsasonmambo musicsalsaLatin jazzsongo and timba. The pattern is also found in the African diaspora musics of Haitian Vodou drumming and Afro- Brazilian music.

The clave pattern is used in North American popular music as a rhythmic motif or ostinatoor simply a form of rhythmic decoration. Conga is of African origin, and derives from street celebrations of the African spirits.

The distinction is blurred today, but in the past the congas have been prohibited from time to time. Carnival as a whole was banned by the revolutionary government for many years, and still does not take place with the regularity of old. Conga drums are played along with other typical instruments in comparsas of all kinds. Santiago de Cuba and Havana were the two main centers for street carnivals. Two types of dance music at least owe their origin to comparsa music:. Conga : an adaptation of comparsa music and dance for social dances.

Eliseo Grenet may be the person who first created this music, [14] p but it was the Lecuona Cuban Boys who took it around the world. The conga became, and perhaps still is, the best-known Cuban music and dance style for non-latins. Mozambique is a comparsa-type dance music developed by Pello el Afrokan Pedro Izquierdo in It had a brief period of high popularity, peaked inand was soon forgotten.

Apparently, to make it work properly, it needed 16 drums plus other percussion and dancers. Immigrants from Haiti settled in Oriente and established their style of music, called Tumba Francesa, which uses its own type of drum, dance and song. It embodies one of the oldest and most tangible links to the Afro-Haitian heritage of Cuba's Oriente province and developed from an 18th-century fusion of music from Dahomey in West Africa and traditional French dances.

This fossil genre survives to the present day in Santiago de Cuba and Haiti, performed by specialized folk ensembles. The Contradanza is an important precursor of several later popular dances. It arrived in Cuba in the late 18th century from Europe where it had been developed first as the English country dance, and then as the French contradanse. The origin of the word is a corruption of the English term "country dance". The Contradanza is a communal sequence dance, with the dance figures conforming to a set pattern.

The selection of figures for a particular dance was usually set by a master of ceremonies or dance leader. There were two parts of 16 bars each, danced in a line or square format. The tempo and style of the music was bright and fairly fast. This version shows for the first time the well known rhythm of "Tango" or "Habanera" which differentiates it from the European contradance. The Cubans developed a number of creolized version, such as the "paseo", "cadena", "sostenido" and "cedazo". This creolization is an early example of the influence of the African traditions in the Caribbean.

Most of the musicians were black or mulatto even early in the 19th century there were many freed slaves and mixed race persons living in Cuban towns. The contradanza supplanted the minuet as the most popular dance until from on, it gave way to the habanera, a quite different style.

This genere, the offspring of the contradanza, was also danced in lines or squares. It was also a brisk form of music and dance in double or triple time. A repeated 8-bar paseo was followed by two bar sections called the primera and segunda. One famous composer of danzas was Ignacio Cervanteswhose forty-one danzas cubanas were a landmark in musical nationalism. The habanera developed out of the contradanza in the early 19th century. Its great novelty was that it was sungas well as played and danced.

The dance style of the habanera is slower and more stately than the danza. The rhythm is similar to that of the tangoand some believe the habanera is the musical father of the tango. It is a descendant of the creolized Cuban contradanza. The stimulus for this was the success of the once-scandalous walzwhere couples danced facing each other, independently from other couples and not as part of a pre-set structure.

The later development of the charanga was more suited to the indoor salon and is an orchestral format still popular today in Cuba and some other countries. This change in instrumental set-up is illustrated in Early Cuban bands. It became more syncopatedespecially in its third part. Early Danzons were purely instrumental. Between them he mentioned a "guaracha" named "La Guabina", about which he says: "in the voice of those that sings it, tastes like any thing dirty, indecent or disgusting that you can think about.

According to Alejo Carpentier quoting Buenaventura Pascual Ferrerat the beginning of the 19th century there were held in Havana up to fifty dance parties every day, where the famous "guaracha" was sung and danced, among other popular pieces. The guaracha is a genre of rapid tempo and comic or picaresque lyrics. Many of the early trovadores, such as Manuel Corona who worked in a brothel area of Havanacomposed and sang guarachas as a balance for the slower boleros and canciones.

The satirical lyric content also fitted well with the son, and many bands played both genres. In the midth century the style was taken up by the conjuntos and big bands as a type of up-tempo music.

Today it seems no longer to exist as a distinct musical form; it has been absorbed into the vast maw of Salsa. Singers who can handle the fast lyrics and are good improvisors are called guaracheros or guaracheras.

From the 18th century at least to modern times, popular theatrical formats used, and gave rise to, music and dance. Many famous composers and musicians had their careers launched in the theatres, and many famous compositions got their first airing on the stage.

In addition to staging some European operas and operettas, Cuban composers gradually developed ideas that better suited their audience. Recorded music was to be the couduit for Cuban music to reach the world. The most recorded artist in Cuba up to was a singer at the AlhambraAdolfo Colombo. Starting off with imported Spanish content List of zarzuela composersit developed into a running commentary on Cuba's social and political events and problems.

Zarzuela reached its peak in the first half of the 20th century. Great stars like the vedette Rita Montanerwho could sing, play the piano, dance and act, were the Cuban equivalents of Mistinguett and Josephine Baker in Paris. She studied vocal techniques in Cuba, where she made her debut in as a lyrical singer in the Company of Maestro Ernesto Lecuona. At the beginning of the s, she signed a number of contracts in Latin America and in Spain. She married Perico Suarez.

The Cuban Revolution caught her abroad and she never returned to her country. She died in Miami in Cuban bufo theatre is a form of comedy, ribald and satirical, with stock figures imitating types that might be found anywhere in the country.

The "guaracha" occupied a predominant place within the development of vernacular theater in Cuba, which appearance at the beginning of the 19th century coincides with the emergence of the first autochthonous Cuban musical genres, the "guaracha" and the"contradanza.

Those structural transformations were also associated to certain changes in the musical background of the pieces. Vernacular theatre of various types often includes music.

Formats rather like the British Music Hallor the American Vaudevillestill occur, where an audience is treated to a potpourri of singers, comedians, bands, sketches and speciality acts. Even in cinemas during the silent movies, singers and instrumentalists appeared in the interval, and a pianist played during the films. Burlesque was also common in Havana before In reference to the emergence of the Guaracha and, at a later time, also of the Urban Rumba in Havana and Matanzas, it is important to mention an important and picturesque social sector called Black Curros Negros Curros.

Composed of free blacks that had arrived from Seville on an undetermined date, this group was integrated to the population of free blacks and mulattos that lived in the marginal zones of the city of Havana. The curro was dedicated to laziness, theft and procuring, while his companion, the curra, also called "mulata de rumbo", exercised the prostitution in Cuba.

But the Curros also provided entertainment, including songs and dances to the thousands of Spanish men that came to the Island every year in the ships that followed the "Carrera de Indias", a route established by the Spanish Crown for their galleons in order to avoid attacks from pirates and privateers, and stayed for months until they returned to the Port of Seville.

Being subject to the influence of both the Spanish and the African culture from birth, they are supposed to have played an important role in the creolization of the Spanish song-dances original proto-type copla-estribillo that originated the Cuban Guaracha.

The Black curro and the Mulata de Rumbo Black Curra disappeared since the midth century by integrating to the Havana general population, but their picturesque images survived in social prototypes manifested in the characters of the Bufo Theater.

The word Rumba is an abstract term that has been applied with different purposes to a wide variety of subjects for a very long time. All of them denote a Congolese origin due to the utilization of sound combinations such as, mb, ng and nd, that are typical of the Niger-Congo linguistic complex.

Maybe the most ancient and general of its meanings is that of a feast or "holgorio". As far as the second half of the 19th century, this word can be found used several times to represent a feast in a short story called "La mulata de rumbo", from the Cuban folklorist Francisco de Paula Gelabert: "I have more enjoyment and fun in a rumbita with those of my color and class", or "Leocadia was going to bed, as I was telling you, nothing less than at twelve noon, when one of his friends from the rumbas arrived, along with another young man that he wanted to introduce to her.

Among many others, some ultizations of the term "rumba include a cover-all term for faster Cuban music which started in the early s with The Peanut Vendor. This term was replaced during the s by salsawhich is also a cover-all term for marketing the Cuban music and other Hispano-Caribbean genres to non-Cubans.

In the international Latin-American dance syllabus rumba is a misnomer for the slow Cuban rhythm more accurately called bolero-son. Some scholars have pointed out that in reference to the utilization of the terms rumba and guaracha, there is possibly a case of synonymyor the use of two different words to denominate the same thing.

Linares also said in reference to this subject: "Some recordings of guarachas and rumbas have been preserved that do not differentiate between them in the guitar parts — when it was a small group, duo or trio, or by the theater orchestra or a piano. A the beginning, rumba musicians used a trio of wooden boxes cajones to play, that were substituted at a later time by drums, similar in appearance to conga drums. The vocal part of the rumba corresponds to a modified version of the ancient Spanish style of "copla-estribillo" quatrain-refrainincluding a "montuno" section that one may consider an expanded or developed "refrain" that constitute an independent section which include the call and response style, so typical of the African traditions.

It is fast and swift and also includes aggressive and acrobatic moves. The dance simulates the man's pursuit of the woman. All forms of rumba are accompanied by song or chants. There are also amateur groups based on Casas de Cultura Culture Centersand on work groups. The music received more praise than the libretto, and the performers received more than either, but The Morning Post recorded, "The opera, we regret to say, was received very coldly".

In April Gounod married Anna Zimmerman —daughter of his former piano professor at the Conservatoire. The marriage led to a breach with Viardot; the Zimmermanns refused to have anything to do with her, for reasons that are not clear. Gounod's biographer Steven Huebner refers to rumours about a liaison between the singer and composer, but adds that "the real story remains murky". One of them, Georges Bizetfound Gounod's teaching inspiring, praised "his warm and paternal interest" and remained a lifelong admirer.

The score included twelve choruses as well as orchestral interludes. It was written for the St Cecilia 's day celebrations of at Saint-Eustacheand in Flynn's view demonstrates Gounod's success in "blending the operatic style with church music — a task at which many of his colleagues tried and failed". As well as church and concert music, Gounod was composing operas, beginning with La Nonne sanglante The Bloody Nun,a melodramatic ghost story with a libretto that Berlioz had tried and failed to set, and that AuberMeyerbeerVerdi and others had rejected.

In January Gounod was appointed a knight of the Legion of Honour. The three had worked on the piece inbut it had to be shelved to avoid clashing with a rival non-operatic Faust at another theatre. After these two moderate successes, [65] Gounod had an outright failure, La Reine de Sabaa grand opera with an exotic setting.

The city enchanted him as much as ever: in Huebner's words "renewed exposure to Rome's close entwining of Christianity and classical culture energized him for the travails of his career back in Paris". Within a year of the premiere it was staged in major opera houses in continental Europe, Britain and the US. Other than Faust it remains the only Gounod opera to be frequently staged internationally.

After the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War inGounod moved with his family from their home in Saint-Cloudoutside Paris, first to the countryside near Dieppe and then to England. The house in Saint-Cloud was wrecked by Poetic - Various - Absolute Music 79 (CD) advancing Prussians in the build-up to the Siege of Paris.

Gounod accepted an invitation from the organising committee of the Annual International Exhibition to write a choral piece for its grand opening at the Royal Albert Hall on 1 May As a result of its favourable reception he was appointed director of the new Royal Albert Hall Choral Society, which, with Queen Victoria 's approval, was subsequently renamed the Royal Choral Society.

The music critic of The TimesJ. There was much inconclusive conjecture about the nature of their relationship. Once peace was restored in France duringAnna Gounod returned home with her mother and children, but Gounod stayed on in London, living in the Weldons' house. Gounod lived in the Weldons' household for nearly three years.

The French newspapers speculated about his motives for remaining in London; they speculated the more when it was suggested that he had declined the French President's invitation to return and succeed Auber as director of the Conservatoire.

She later brought a lawsuit against him which effectively prevented him from coming back to Britain after May The musical scene in France had altered considerably during Gounod's absence. After the death of Berlioz inGounod had been generally regarded as France's leading composer. Resuming operatic composition, Gounod finished Polyeucteon which he had been working in London, and during composed Cinq-Marsa four-act historical drama set in the time of Cardinal Richelieu.

In the words of Gounod's biographer James Harding"After Polyeucte had been martyred on twenty-nine occasions the box-office ruled that enough was enough. He was never resuscitated. Gounod's last years were lived at Saint-Cloud, composing sacred music and writing his memoirs and essays.

On 15 Octoberafter returning home from playing the organ for Mass at his local church, he suffered a stroke while working on a setting of the Requiem in memory of his grandson Maurice, who had died in infancy. After being in a coma for three days Gounod died on 18 October, at the age of But the quartet in the first act, the duet and trio in the second, where the passions of the principal characters break out with such force, absolutely revolted me".

The one fairly well known number from the score, Sapho's "O ma lyre immortelle", is a reworking of a song he had composed in La Nonne sanglantea work on a larger scale than Saphosuffers from a libretto that Huebner describes as an "unhappy blend of historico-political grand opera and the supernatural".

He observes that in the traditions of grand opera it features processions, ballets, large ensemble numbers, and "a plot where the love interest is set against a more or less clearly drawn historical backdrop". A reviewer praised its "verve and imagination In Stravinsky's words, "[Diaghilev's] dream of a Gounod 'revival' failed in the face of an indifferent and snobbish public who did not dare applaud the music of a composer not accepted by the avant-garde".

Faust appealed to the public not only because of its tunefulness but also for its naturalness. For a revival by Diaghilev inthe young Francis Poulenc composed recitatives to replace the spoken dialogue. Mireille was a moderate success, and although it did not emulate Faust in becoming an international hit, it remained popular in France into the 20th century.

He said that it had never been popular in England except as a vehicle for Adelina Patti and then Nellie Melbaand that in New York it had only featured regularly at the Metropolitan Opera when it was under the control of Maurice Grau in the late 19th-century. His three attempts, Cinq-MarsPolyeucteand Le Tribut de Zamorawere all taken off after brief runs, and have seldom been seen since. The two symphonies, in D major and E-flat major, cannot be precisely dated. The first was completed at some time before and the second by Late in life Gounod started but did not complete a Third Symphony.

A complete slow movement and much of a first movement survive. The Petite Symphoniewritten for nine wind instruments, follows the classical, four-movement pattern, with a slow introduction to the sonata form first movement. The commentator Diether Stepphun refers to its "cheerfully contemplative and gallant wit, with all the experience of human and musical maturity". It consists of a descant superimposed over a version of the first prelude of Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier.

In its original form it is for violin with piano; the words of the Hail Mary were added to the melody later. Gounod's output of liturgical and other religious music was prolific, including 23 masses, more than 40 other Latin liturgical settings, more than 50 religious songs and part-songs, and seven cantatas or oratorios. InGustave Chouquet and Adolphe Jullien wrote of "a monotony and heaviness which must weary the best-disposed audience".

Other critics have referred to "the ooze of the erotic priest" and called the oratorios "the height of nineteenth-century hypocritical piety". Orledge judges the early masses as the best of Gounod's religious music. Gounod's songs are by far the most numerous of his compositions: he wrote more than a hundred French secular songs and thirty more in English or Italian for the British market.

Gounod's gift for singable melody enabled him to smuggle the art song — a high-born and demanding infant — into the homes and hearts of the French middle class where operatic airs, operetta, romance, and chansonnette had previously held sway. From his earliest period, during and just after his time as a Prix de Rome student, Gounod's songs include some of his best, in the view of both Huebner and Johnson.

The songs of Gounod's middle and later years are in the main judged less impressive. Although only a comparatively small amount of Gounod's music endures in the regular musical repertoire, his influence on later French composers was important.

In Cooper's words, "he was more than an individual composer: he was the voice of a deep and permanent strain in the French character Whether one wants to or not, that kind of thing is not forgotten".
