Sandy Koufax Koufax has the most No-Hitters on the list. He tossed four of them, all with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and all in successive seasons. Think of what he might have done had his arm not hurt all the time! Randy Johnson It would be almost four decades before the next pitcher would join this list. If you can think of a more difficult pitching accomplishment, I'd love to hear it! The negotiations for trading players between major league ballclubs can be tense, drawn-out matters, because you just never know what you're actually going to get or give away especially when it comes to prospects until the deal is done.
One of the baseball trivia questions is: Can you name the five players the Phillies dealt away for Hayes? The biggest names there, Trillo and Franco, were at the end and beginning of their careers respectively, and Hayes was a hot commodity at the time, but five players for one? Ivan DeJesus? Not so much Louis Cardinals for Gary Templeton Whatever was affecting the minds of the Phillie's brass when it came to trading in the winter of '82 was also in the air in San Diego.
Smith was still early in his career, but his abilities certainly were not a question. Gary Templeton was a decent shortstop, but nowhere near The Wizard's level. What were they thinking? Louis Cardinals for TJ Matthews, Blake Stein and Eric Ludwick Fifteen years later the Cardinals were still stealing bargains from California-based teams, this time picking up one of the game's most noted and most controversial sluggers for the equivalent of a handful of magic beans.
The Astros were looking for late-season pitching help, and figured, hey, it's only going to cost us one prospect. Bagwell turned out to be one helluva prospect, and Andersen still chuckles about being involved in this trade. Pappas was probably the best of the three they picked up, and he wasn't that good. Old Album) Robinson? Fregosi would be much more successful as a manager than as a ballplayer, although he was no slouch on the field. But the fourth player they traded away in the deal?
Some hard-throwing pitcher the Mets didn't feel had the control to be successful. He went on to prove them very, very wrong. His name was Nolan Ryan. Any head-scratchers I missed? Share your favorite terrible trades in the comments section below! New Wave for the New Week Image via Wikipedia The Music Industry doesn't like to take gambles, unless it's betting on a sure thing - or a reasonably good knock-off of a sure thing.
For a period of time back inthere was no surer thing than Boy George's band Culture Club. And so the Music Industry, hoping to cash in on that successful formula, went searching for the next Boy George. On these shores, they never quite succeeded; in the UK, however, they thought they had found him in one of George's fellow London scenesters, Peter Robinson.
Robinson went by the name of Marilynand was well-known along with Boy George in the British club scene as one of the "Blitz Kids," a group of regulars at Steve Strange's The Blitz nightclub, a venue that was a focal point of the early-'80s New Romantic movement: Strange was a founding member of the group Visage ; members of Spandau Ballet first came together there as well.
Now it was time to deliver the goods: an actual record. Things began promisingly enough with Marilyn's debut single, "Calling Your Name. It hadn't. Culture Club had run out of steam and the Boy George backlash had already begun by mid when Marilyn's debut album Despite Straight Lines landed on store shelves.
Even worse, the album was terrible. Marilyn's thin voice was not even up to the bland formulaic Culture Club-lite music written for him. He received virtually no airplay at all in the US, and the album - and Marilyn - sank without a trace.
The shame of it is, "Calling Your Name" is really a very good song that got lost in the muddle of a misdirected and poorly-timed attempt at a Music Industry cash-in. Image by Album) Allison via Flickr Getting on base is key in helping your team win ball games.
After all, runs cannot be batted in unless someone gets on base! According to the rules of Major League Baseball, there are exactly 8 ways a batter can reach first base. Can you list them all? In case you're stumped, here they are: 1.
Hit 2. Walk 3. Hit by Pitch 4. Fielder's Choice 5. Reached on Error 6. Dropped Third Strike 7. Catcher's Interference 8. Fielder's Interference Now, you will find people who argue additional ways exist, but they are almost always variations of one of the 8 listed above. For example, yes, a batter can reach first on a wild pitch with 3 balls already in the count, but folks, that's still a walk, covered in 2.
And for you wise-acres who want to add "Being inserted as a pinch-runner," clever but wrong. The list is ways a batter can reach first, and a pinch-runner ain't a batter! There also happen to be exactly 8 days until Opening Day And so, I share with you my pick for the best 9 to ever take a field in a single game.
It happened infor a little-known team called the Tea-Totallers: 1. Catching: Bugs Bunny 2. Left Field: Bugs Bunny 3. Right Field: Bugs Bunny 4. Pitching: Bugs Bunny 5. Third Base: Bugs Bunny 6. Center Field: Bugs Bunny 7. First Base: Bugs Bunny 8. Shortstop: Bugs Bunny 9.

Recorded late last year at Amps vs. Of course, there will be plenty of those as well, but watch out for some acoustic guitar, and deep-in-the-mix vocals, as they could easily hint of things to come. Or Darryl could turn it on its head and do a calypso record. You may notice something strange about the date above for a list of upcoming albums in that July 7 was yesterday.
Bongripper on Thee FacebooksMiserable on Bandcamp. The spaces Botanist — a one-man project from Robert Martinelli — create feel ritualistic without the dramatic posturing that pervades much of the genre, and sound, somewhere between raging and mournful, is hypnotic.
Whatever your expectation might be, Martinelli seems pleased to use it to their advantage, and ultimately, defy it. Post-human, hammered dulcimer-laden black metal. It would be harder for Botanist to not be unique. Botanist on Thee FacebooksThe Flenser. Fortunately, the Seattle band, led by guitarist Dylan Media Screws - Kalas - Kalas (Vinyl and now approaching their 25th year, have long since proven worthy of trusting with their own direction.
Earth will never be huge, by the simple nature of what they do, but their influence resounds and the quality of their output is unmatched. Expect 66 minutes of glorious filth.
Palm Desert youngsters Fever Dog have been kicking around the last few years finding their sound in varying elements of heavy rock and psychedelic experimentation. Somehow, a band from Sweden who dress up in tribal costumes problematic and play Afrobeat psychedelia became a very, very big deal. It would be tempting to call Goat a novelty act, but their debut, World Music discussed hereshowcased a legitimately creative musical approach to go with the visual aspects of their presentation, and I find the fact that I have no idea what to expect from Commune to be refreshing.
UK heavy rockers Grifter will make a welcome resurgence on Ripple Music with The Return of the Bearded Brethrenan album that builds on the straightforward, catchy sounds of their self-titled label debut review here and takes their infectiousness to new places lyrically, such as exploring issues of aging via an ode to Princess Leia from Star Wars.

Also note the incredible artwork of Costin Chioreanu. Love these guys, love this band. I make no bones about it. The Kings of Frog Island have shown themselves to be so dedicated to the format that their early album, IV review herewas presented as two bundled sides even digitally.
All the better. Fucking a. More to come. Unheralded, Novembers Doom keep exploring deeper, darker terrain. Arkansas-based doom four-piece Pallbearer will mark its release with extensive European and North American toursand where their Profound Lore debut, Sorrow and Extinction review herecame out and caught listeners off-guard with its unabashed emotional core, their sophomore outing finds them positioned at the forefront of American doom.
For The Skull to put out an album of original material is a unique challenge. Fingers crossed on this one. How they expand on the heavier crunch of Terminus remains even more a point of fascination, and surely their cult following will be glad to find out. I know I will. Would be an awfully long way to go, otherwise. Steak on Thee FacebooksNapalm Records. It is with simple, unabashed warm feelings that I look forward to hearing Cry of the Oceanthe second long-player and Ripple Music debut from UK riffers Stubb.

As such, Mobile of Angelswhich will be out on Svart in Europe and Profound Lore in North America, comes as the end product of a considerable touring cycle. Has all that gigging worn Witch Mountain into the ground, or will they rise above it with metal-loving doom-blues supremacy? Yet again — as was the case back in January — alphabetical order forces me to end with YOBwhose seventh full-length and Neurot debut might just be my most anticipated of all on this list.
Now statesmen in American doom and the forebears of a cosmic-minded sound, YOB stand ready to showcase a creative progression that has yet to find its end point. Some were carried over from earlier this year, others just come up along the way.
Not sure on all the release dates, but these are worth keeping an ear out for:. Acid King — Were listed in January, but their record has a Feb. Bright Curse — Second album recorded at Skyhammer Studios. More stoner-funk riffing needs to be had. It seemed like a cool project. I looked into doing something like this, but the associated transformers, cooling chimneys etc. I bought a CD of an early Sonics album which, I now think, had been created by playing a Victrola across the room from a couple of cheap digital mics.
The Sonics, perhaps inventors of punk, and certainly an exciting listen on the gloomiest of days, sounded like the Carpenters AFTER Karen had burned her last calorie. I have 3 stereos. They are mostly old — parts and pieces people gave me over the years.
I have boombox from the early s Sony. It was stored in a closet and never used. I bought it a few years ago for 20 bucks. Like you believe you killed Tom Petty, my family believes we killed Harry Kalas, the long time Phillies announcer. One night, just that the baseball season was starting, we were debating about buying the MLB package that would allow us to hear all of the Phillies games on the computer.
That was the clincher, so we made the purchase. The next day old Harry was dead in the broadcast booth… It had to be our fault! Tom Petty was an American original, long career and a large following.
Stones, etc. Good music endures. I think it is a LP recognition of old artist skill as well as an indictment of the current state of pop music. Benny Goodman was on a different branch of the music tree: one that used no individual amplification, which was a critical distinction when music exploded after WWII.
Count Basie would have been closer. Fats Waller was dead. Proto-rock, whatever. I like me some Count Basie too. And the Ramones, of course. Bose Soundtouch… you can play whatever you want on it via your wi-fi… stream, MP3 library… control it wherever you are on your phone.
It works great. That was just the entry point if you were serious about music, whether or not you were serious about gear. Most everybody, including said Beatles and unsaid Bob Dylan issued all of their early releases in mono. For several years I lived in a big house with a few other guys, and mine was about the third best sound system. The one we put in the dance room was a fine component system playing through Speakerlab Ks five foot tall pentagonal speakers that routed bass to the back and had to be placed in a corner.
But people fall in love or get married — and everything changes. I am an unrepentant feminist, but I swear the loud music gene group lives on the Y chromosome. At the minimum, a living room dominated by a sound system rather than a sectional or Louis XV fucking chairs is a guy thing. Bob Dylan sounds injured, Leonard Cohen is gone, and the rest are dropping like flies at a petrochemical farm. Buy that shit while you are still passionate and can still hear. Just a little free advice.
To be fair I feel the same about all the fucking candles. I think Sgt Pepper was a transitional recording which was released in both mono and stereo versions feel free to correct me. In any case, I remember distinctly hearing a mono vinyl version of the album at the time on a good sound system, and remember it sounding less poppy and more rocky, less pretty and more gritty than the stereo version I later heard on a good sound system.
Do you know whether they released a 50th anniversary mono version as well as a stereo version? Also, I see that this comes in both vinyl and CD and, I suppose other digital formats. I assume they started with the original tapes to make each. I suspect otherwise, one format would be sub-optimized. Do you know whether this is the case? Thanks for still caring about this important record. Sidebar: My grandfather was born just south of Glasgow and was a fan of the local club, which was just a club then circa s.
