Starkly contrasting to its predecessor, Ghost Stories is a cold and haunted sounding album mostly as promised by the front cover consisting of minimalist electronic soundscapes. The comparisons to Radiohead, while this is absolutely not a Kid Aseem to be more apt on this album given the noticeably muted tone of the sparsely arranged opening two tracks, both of which feature purely electronic Pleasure Boys - Pleasure (Cassette with Chris Martin singing in a lower key of vocal.
In fact, the entire album, out of anything in their discography, is the one most driven by Pleasure Boys - Pleasure (Cassette and electronic beats. There are no live drums on this album. Given my thoughts on Mylo Xylotoyou would have thought i'd despise this album. But, unlike Mylo Xylotothere's a greater sincerity to the experimentation of sound. Where MX lacked atmosphere, Ghost Stories is drenched in melancholy gloom.
The electronic beats, meanwhile, are there to serve the songs rather than tracks like "Paradise" and "Princess of China" where it was a blatant roadmap following of the trending flavour of pop music at the time. Instead, the tracks take greater risks on tracks like "Midnight" which is pure ambient electronica while "True Love" features a weirdly dissonant guitar solo that shouldn't work, but it does.
The lyrics handle sentimentality with far more maturity and depth than on Mylo Xyloto : Call it magic Call it true I call it magic When I'm with you And I just got broken Broken into two When I'm next to you The lyrics here are direct as much as they are simple, but once again there is a sense of sincerity and transparency between the songwriter and listener.
But, this in itself leads to one scathing flaw with this overall album; the protagonist, throughout the entire album from track to track and across every line is Chris Martin. Every single track is a biography of their breakup. There are no characters on this album. Everything you hear on this album is Chris Martin dealing with his emotional struggle over a dissolved marriage. I mean Late night watching TV Used to be here beside me Used to be your arms around me Pleasure Boys - Pleasure (Cassette body on my body When the world means nothing to me Or the pure EDM assault of "A Sky Full of Stars": 'Cause you're a sky, 'cause you're a sky full of stars I'm gonna give you my heart 'Cause you're a sky, 'cause you're a sky full of stars 'Cause you light up the path I don't care, go on and tear me apart I don't care if you do, ooh 'Cause in a sky, 'cause in a sky full of stars If someone were to tell me that they hate this album with every fibre of their being, I couldn't blame them.
In fact, I don't know whether to pay kudos to the other three members of the band or see them as yes men for taking part in a project that clearly has Chris as front and centre. For me, I like the album because of how relentlessly raw the songwriting is along with the bold choices of music arrangements and the absolutely schizophrenic departure from the previous two albums not that those two are particularly alike at all.
I really enjoy this album for the risks it takes and truly hope it is given a re-evaluation one day because while it is very much a Chris Martin album, it still bares the Coldplay name, they somehow had the courage to make it a Coldplay album rather than a Passengers type of record under an alter-ego.
But, it can't be avoided that, for the most part, Ghost Stories is a mournful stroll through Chris Martin's journal. I like this album a lot, but I can't recommend it. It's either for you, or it's not. DebonaireNerdAug 31, That's the pattern which seems to be the ongoing motif throughout this discography, album 7 being no exception. Admittedly, this album is the "smarter" of the two albums.
The beats are more mannered and the bass feels a lot less dub-step driven while the overall style of music is more varied than what was being offered on Mylo Xyloto.
Among the highlights are the title track and Pleasure Boys - Pleasure (Cassette Of A Lifetime", both being he band's foray into disco and dance rock, not unlike 70s era Bee Gees.
