In MarchSchwarzkopf was invited to audition for Walter Leggean influential British classical record producer and a founder of the Philharmonia Orchestra. They were married on 19 October in EpsomSurrey ; Schwarzkopf thus acquired British citizenship by marriage. Schwarzkopf's last operatic performance was as the Marschallin on 31 Decemberin the theatre of La Monnaie in Brussels. For the next several years, she devoted herself exclusively to lieder recitals. On 17 MarchWalter Legge suffered a severe heart attack. In song she was unmatched by any artist of her era other than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. From the era of 78rpm discs untilwhen Legge left EMI, they collaborated on an unprecedently long catalogue of recordings, among the most successful of which were many sets of operetta, to whose heroines Schwarzkopf's style was peculiarly well suited. Karajan was also in charge of one of Schwarzkopf's three recordings of Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs, a live event at the Festival Hall, but probably the best of the three is the earliest, a studio performance under Otto Ackermann, the voice at its freshest, her style at its most natural.
Both events were recorded by Legge for posterity, and show her at her most persuasive. Her main appearances in the US were with the San Francisco Opera, where she appeared from debut as the Marschallin to Her Metropolitan debut was belatedly made inagain as the Marschallin, and she returned as Donna Elvira the following year.
